Daily Number: No Religion, No Representation - Pew Research Center
Fascinating data from Pew comparing the religious affiliations of Congressional members with that of the general US population. I have to wonder if “unaffiliated” types are truly unrepresented in Congress, though. Members of Congress:
- are regularly asked what their religious affiliation is, which means they’ve had many opportunities to come up with a good answer. (“Unaffiliated” Americans are often those who answer “nothing in particular” when polled on their religion.)
- are PR-savvy enough to know that “no religion” doesn’t poll well.
- are just putting down a word which may or may not reflect their actual practices or beliefs.
BTW, in this poll, “Restorationist” likely refers to Christian Church/Church of Christ members, who are also likely to call themselves “nondenominational” or “Other Christian.”
