Mark 5 Contrasts
Legion begs Jesus NOT to heal him. When Jesus does, he commands Legion to tell everyone. The crowds, meanwhile, beg Jesus to leave.
On the other side of the Sea of Galilee, the crowds flock to Jesus, and Jairus begs him to heal his daughter. When Jesus does, he commands Jairus to tell no one.

Daily Number: No Religion, No Representation - Pew... →
Fascinating data from Pew comparing the religious affiliations of Congressional members with that of the general US population. I have to wonder if “unaffiliated” types are truly unrepresented in Congress, though. Members of Congress:
are regularly asked what their religious affiliation is, which means they’ve had many opportunities to come up with a good answer....

Confusing NCAA ruling against Ohio State
I’m very confused by this NCAA ruling. The NCAA says the players are still eligible for the Sugar Bowl because they didn’t receive “adequate rules education during the time period the violations occurred.” Then why are they receiving a penalty at all? During the offseason, will the NCAA travel back in time to provide adequate education?

Missing Context on the Golden Temple →
This article manages to omit both the Golden Temple’s religious significance (it houses Sikhism’s sacred book, which Sikh’s regard as a living guru) and its political meaning (a 1980s Indian military attack on Sikh militants at the Temple killed hundreds of civilians and led directly to Indira Gandhi’s assassination by two of her Sikh bodyguards).

Ivy League Bias against White Christians? →
My friend (and Miami education prof) Julie Park responds to Ross Douthat’s column alleging bias against white Christians at elite universities.
My LeBron Predictions (if anyone cares)
If he goes to Miami (a big if), then here’s how the near future plays out:
Miami loses in the Eastern Conference finals next year to Boston, the year after that to Orlando, and then, maybe, makes the finals in 2013. If Miami doesn’t self-destruct by then.
LA wins the 2011 and 2012 NBA Championships, and Kobe - with 7 NBA rings - establishes his claim for Best of All Time. He’s...

How did central Kentucky become horse country? -... →
Interesting. And a strange “correction” at the end, stating that Louisville is actually in “north central” Kentucky, not “central” Kentucky. If Louisville is in “north central Kentucky,” then I guess Indiana is “northwestern Kentucky.” Kentucky has a bad rep for education, but what does it say about Slate’s East Coast readers...

I’m fascinated that “technology,” a word coined in the 1600’s from ancient Greek roots, is now so often used as a synonym for “computers.”
